Why Are Things Unconscious?

The Dream:
I am working on an image in Photoshop. The software suggests what part of the image should be cropped out. I don’t like the software making these determinations, but after a while I realize it’s right. The areas it wants me to delete are populated with animals and plants: leaving these in detracts from the main part of the picture.

Interpretation: Our more primitive knowledge and experience, symbolized here by plants and animals, is kept at an unconscious level; so it appears to have been deleted (cropped out). This dream tells me why: consciousness evolved to enable us to focus.

  1. I am interested in the software (soft ware) that is the guiding principle behind the decision to crop the distracting plants and animals. For me, it's the Higher Self of Jung, or the Riddle Mother of Clarissa Pinkola Estes, or the Inner Spirit of world religions. In my dream, this process is beginning to be seen and acknowledged as dream ego, after a bit of time, decides it is "right" and follows its advice. Invisible software is what allows us to do our computer work - we don't have to intellectually understand it in order to use it, but it's always there in the background interpreting our actions when we strike the keyboard or move the mouse. Our inner guides, spirits, wisdom work like software-our thoughts & actions impact this inner, invisible, process. I am not talking about the unconscious, but the spiritual process that is active in us. We need to trust it and follow its guidance, if we can. The later dream with the head being sliced in 3 (spirit, mind, matter) says I'm not trusting or I'm downplaying this inner, intuitive flow. Fascinating series of dreams, if they came in this order! 2. Thank you, Emily, for this spiritual understanding of the dream. The two dreams (Unconscious and Head Slicer) occurred in the sequence you find them in here, on consecutive nights.
